Minimally Invasive or Laparoscopic Surgery Options
In a laparoscopic procedure, our surgeon uses several small incisions instead of one open incision. Through one of the incisions, Dr. Shapiro inserts a laparoscope, which is a miniature camera that projects the images it records onto a large monitor; therefore allowing us to see inside your body without having to make a larger incision.
The advantages of state-of-the-art laparoscopic surgical technology include:
- Faster Recovery
- Less Post-Operative Pain
- Less Post-Operative Discomfort
- Decreased Scarring
- Fewer Disruptions to Your Life
At Advanced Surgical Physicians, we discuss all options with you so you can choose the best surgical approach for your case.
When is less really more? When it’s LESS!
LESS is one of the newest laparoscopic techniques, and it is regarded as non-invasive. In general, LESS techniques take about the same amount of time to do as traditional laparoscopic surgeries. However, rather than the traditional four to five small incisions, a single small incision is used. All surgical instruments are placed through this small incision.
Although LESS offers exciting benefits for a wide variety of patients, not everyone is eligible for the procedure. Obesity, severe adhesions, or scarring from previous surgeries are a few of the factors that would prohibit patients from obtaining this type of surgery.
Key benefits of single incision laparoscopic surgery:
- Fewer incisions
- Less possibility for infection and scarring
- Better cosmetic results
- Faster recovery times
Currently, the following operations can be performed by LESS:
- Removal of Gallbladder (cholecystectomy)
- Removal of Appendix (Appendicectomy)
- Repair of Paraumbilical or Incisional Hernia
- Repair of Inguinal Hernia
- Removal of Ovary (Oophorectomy)
- Removal of Uterus (Hysterectomy)
- Diagnostic Laparoscopy with Biopsy
At Advanced Surgical Physicians, we can discuss all options with you and determine if you qualify for this minimally invasive surgery.
